Update Letter

In late November you can send a one-page update letter to any school you have not heard from. The letter should include:

  1. A one-sentence introduction

  2. One paragraph on your new activities

  3. One paragraph on your interest in the school

  4. One sentences thanks

  5. Salutation with full name and contact information

Here is an example letter for reference. Many others are available online. Read several then start from scratch and write your own.

"Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to provide updates on my activities since submitting my application, and to express my continued interest in attending x medical school.

Since submitting my secondary application in July, I have begun volunteering at [organization] in [city]. At the center, I am responsible for [role and work]. I have enjoyed the interactions with both patients and physicians, and have appreciated the ability to gain some insight into the challenges and circumstances marginalized members of our community face.

Being from [city], I can think of no better place to learn and serve our local community. Programs such as [A, B, C] align with my aspirations to [X, Y, Z]. I would hope to become actively involved in the student-run clinic if admitted to your medical school. The X medical community seems deeply committed to healthcare equity in our region, and I hope that my experience and aspirations would find a welcome home at [school].

I appreciate your continued review of my application, and would be honored to interview at your institution."

Please let me know if you have any other questions,
